GradesThere are FOUR things related to grades the you and your student should understand...
1. Students need to complete the ENTIRE course in order to move to the next grade level receive credit. 2. CURRENT Grade - The "Current Grade" represents the quality of the work done UP TO THIS POINT. It is the percentage of accuracy for COMPLETED work. 3. OVERALL Grade - The "Overall Grade" is the grade that the student would get if they stopped doing work at this point. 4. Percent COMPLETE - The amount of the course the student has DONE. Here is how these can be confusing. Mario has been working very hard for ten weeks and has completed 70% of the class. He checks his grades and sees that his current grade is an "A" at 92%. He stops doing work because he thinks he has enough done to pass the class. At the end of the term he gets a D in the class at 61%. This is because he did not do 30% of the class and he missed the final that was worth 15% of his grade. |
ProgressParents and students often wonder how much they should be doing each day or week. Progress is reported in the system and so they can see how far along a student is.
Initially a student is given a start date and an end date. There is usually a pacing guide, but it is a simple process to figure out how much to do. Count the number of school weeks there are between the start and end date. These are usually between 9 and 18 weeks depending on the type of term (quarter, trimester, or semester). Divide 100 (the total percent for completion) by the number of weeks. That gives you the percent you need to do each week to stay on track. So... 9 weeks = 11.1% each week 10 weeks = 10% each week 12 weeks = 8.3% each week 18 weeks = 5.5% If you get off track do this: 1. Figure out what percent is complete. 2. Subtract that number from 100. 3. Divide that number by the number of week left in the term. That is your weekly percent. If something happens and you cannot work for a time due to illness or emergency, contact the school and let us know so we can help! |
